What Is a Solana Token Account?
On Solana, your wallet doesn't hold tokens directly. Each token you own sits in a separate token account linked to your wallet.

Mint account vs token account
The mint account defines the token (supply, decimals, authorities). A token account holds a balance of one token for one owner. The default one for each wallet-and-token pair is the associated token account (ATA), whose address is derived automatically.
Rent and recovering SOL
Each token account holds about 0.00204 SOL as a rent-exempt deposit. When a token account is empty you can close it and get that deposit back — see how to claim free SOL. Estimate costs with the rent calculator.
- Sending a token to a new holder may create an account for them, costing the sender the deposit
- Closing requires a zero balance
- Never sign closing transactions on sites you don't trust
