The main people behind Solana
Solana was not created by one company. Anatoly Yakovenko conceived the Solana protocol and published the 2017 Proof of History paper. Raj Gokal co-founded the project with him and focused on business and operations. Greg Fitzgerald, another co-founder, was one of the early engineers who helped build the original Solana software.
The main organisations
Solana Labs was the original company that developed and launched the Solana protocol. The Solana Foundation, a non-profit based in Zug, Switzerland, supports the ecosystem through grants, development and decentralisation efforts. Anza, spun out of Solana Labs in 2024, maintains a validator client. Solana Mobile makes Android phones with built-in wallets.
The 2020 intellectual property transfer
In 2020, Solana Labs transferred the protocol's intellectual property to the Solana Foundation, along with 167 million SOL at the time, while retaining some SOL for its own operations. This is why the Foundation, not Labs, is usually described as the steward of the protocol today.
Who actually runs the network
Thousands of independent validators run Solana. Changes to the protocol depend on validators choosing to adopt software updates. See who owns Solana and the Solana network.
