Solana SPL Token: What It Is and How to Create One

SPL is Solana's token standard — the equivalent of ERC-20 on Ethereum. Almost every fungible token on Solana, from stablecoins to memecoins, is an SPL token.

Non-custodial · One signature · Metaplex metadata + IPFS · Deployed on mainnet

How an SPL token works

An SPL token is defined by a mint account that stores supply, decimals and authorities. Balances live in separate token accounts, one per wallet per token — see what a Solana token account is.

  • Mint authority: can create more supply
  • Freeze authority: can freeze holders' accounts
  • Decimals: how divisible the token is (commonly 6 or 9)
  • Metadata: name, symbol and logo, usually via Metaplex

SPL vs Token-2022

Token-2022 is a newer token program with extensions such as transfer fees and on-mint metadata. Use the standard SPL creator or the Token-2022 creator.
